For some of us, working from home came naturally, we were comfortable with it from Day 1. Yet, over time, I’ve come to discover from experience how to enhance my productivity while working from home.
Now that many offices are shutting down to curtail the risk of spreading COVID-19, people are resorting to work from home; but that’s something a lot of folks are not used to.
If you’re just joining us (lol), here are some tips to help you adapt to it and still maintain your productivity.
1. ACT LIKE YOU’RE STILL GOING TO WORK
Get up early as you would normally, do your morning routines and prepare like someone getting ready for work. Bathe and dress up (mustn’t be too formal, but not your pajamas or lingerie). These things put you in the work mood.
2. CREATE A DESIGNATED WORK STATION SOMEWHERE IN YOUR HOME
You’ll be tempted to think that since you’re working from home, you might as well be on your bed. Wait until you catch yourself dozing off. To avoid it, use a table or stool; sit up and work from there.
3. DEDICATE TIME FOR WORK
Getting started at first (for most people) will be tough. So you need to make it all look like you’re at the office. Have dedicated work time. Have a to-do list and keep tabs on what you’re accomplishing. Time yourself.
4. SET SOME RULES
If you’re living with others, you need to prepare them for this. Let them know the time you’ve scheduled for work and how you wouldn’t like to be disturbed.
It’s easy for your presence at home to be taken for granted with chores, small talks, etc.
5. TAKE BREAKS IN BETWEEN
Take short breaks, make calls, step out of your door (if you’re living alone), or have a chat with others in the house.
Ehm, you can do a bit of social media oo, but egungu be careful, that express can kill your time.
6. DO OTHER HEALTHY THINGS YOU SHOULD DO WHILE WORKING
Like not keeping your eyes glued to the screen for too long, standing up every now and then, drinking enough water, having your meals, etc.
If you feel dizzy (with much work left to do), step out and take a walk.
7. KNOW WHEN TO SHUT DOWN FOR THE DAY
Workaholics struggle with this. It would only get worse now that they’re working from home.
If you scheduled work time, try to stick with it. Shit down for the day, leave that desk and go do something else.
On the side, please stick with healthy habits like exercising, eating healthily and all. They help you stay active throughout the day. The temptation to be lazy while at home is very high.
Self discipline is also important.
